Timeline for Proposed Bell Schedule Change Extended

At the June 9th school board meeting, Dorchester School District Two staff made a recommendation to the Board of Trustees to extend the timeline for consideration of a proposed change in the bell schedule for the start and dismissal times for district schools.   During the month of May, the school district had shared the proposed adjustments to the schedule with parents and the community, and solicited input through a survey.  Approximately 6,000 surveys were submitted, with most of the responses generally favorable.

The Board of Trustees agreed that more time was needed to inform the public why such changes were being considered and the impact it would have on the instructional day for grades K-12, along with bus transportation services.  In addition, this will provide more opportunities to gather feedback on the proposed changes from parents, teachers, and the community through meetings and additional surveys.  These efforts will be well-publicized and will take place through December 2014.   A final proposal will then be presented to the Board of Trustees for a possible bell schedule change for the 2015-2016 school year.

Board Approves 2014-2015 School Year Calendar
The Dorchester School District Two Board of Trustees approved the calendar for the 2014-2015 school year at the board meeting on Monday night. The following are several points of consideration in development of the calendar.

  • The school year must have 180 instructional days for students
  • The first day for students must be no earlier than the 3rd Monday in August—this year that date would be August 18th
  • The calendar should include 10 teacher workdays/staff development days
  • State law requires that all schools be closed for general elections on the first Tuesday in November which will be November 4th
  • Spring break is scheduled on the week before Easter (March 30, 31st; April 1st-3rd). Due to the State Department of Education’s schedule for HSAP tests for high school students on April 14, 15, 16, it was determined to be in the best interest of students to have them return to school a week before the administration of this high stakes test.
  • The last day for students will be on May 29th
  • The three inclement weather make-up days are included during the year on teacher workdays/staff development days rather than at the end of the year
